Sirius Plug and Play Universal Boombox

  • Amazon Sales Rank: #416 in Car Audio or Theater
  • Brand: Sirius Satellite Radio
  • Model: SUB-X1
  • Dimensions: 9.75" h x 21.75" w x 9.63" l, 1.00 pounds

Bring your Sirius satellite radio receiver to life with this essential plug 'n' play boombox. Compatible with the Sirius Sportster 3, Sportster 4, Starmate 3, Starmate 4, and Stratus receivers, the boombox lets you follow the game or rock out on the patio to any of Sirius's high-quality digital streams. Simply plug your Sirius receiver into the boombox's universal docking cradle and you're set. Listeners will love the SUB-X1's rich, crisp sound, which employs two tweeters, two midrange drivers, and a powerful subwoofer to create a dynamic frequency response of 70 Hz to 20 kHz. The reception is also topnotch thanks to the included indoor/outdoor antenna, which comes with an attached 19.5-foot cable (the antenna must have a relatively clear view of the Sirius satellite paths to work).

Most importantly, the boombox is fully portable, with a built-in handle for transport and a battery power option (the boombox runs for up to nine hours on eight D-cell batteries). And you needn't worry about hauling the antenna along in a separate bag, because the SUB-X1 includes a built-in compartment that stores both the antenna and cable. Other details include a 3.5 mm headphone jack for private listening, an AC adapter for indoor use, built-in bass enhancement technology, an auxiliary input for connecting an iPod, MP3 player, or other audio device, and a docking adapter that works with ST and SV series Sirius satellite tuners. The boombox, which measures 19.18 by 8.81 by 8 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 7.3 pounds (without batteries), is backed by a one-year warranty.

only certain locations2
I had intended to use the boombox at work. I originially did not know about the need for the indoor/outdoor antenna, which of course makes sense in order to receive a satelite signal, but there is NO physical way for me to get the anntenna outside and I don't have a window in my office. I even tried the boombox at home with the antenna on the windowsill, and I still couldn't get a signal. So disappointed! The boombox is a great design, light weight, and great sound (when I could get a signal for 2 sec.), but unless you have just the right place to put it or are able to put the antenna outside, you may have limited signal capability. So sad! I love my satelite radio!

Nice to have, but...3
...it is just a box with an on and off switch and volume control. There is no ability to adjust the bass/treble/etc. And I think it's a little too bass.

It's a nice looking unit and I enjoy having Sirius radio in the house. It has a jack, so you can plug your iPod or computer into it to listen to another source.

simple boombox with universal docking station4
I've been using Sirius for almost two years. I recently upgraded to the Sporster 5 from the Sportster 1 (unit went bad, no antenna pick up). I had the home dock and boombox for the Sportster 1.

The boombox is very simple. Basic plug and play. Has two 4" woofer for mid and high-low range, two tweeters, and 1 5 1/5" downward firing woofer for a sub. The port for the sub is the front (front middle screen). Clean sound. Decent low end. Compared to the previous boombox, able to maintain a cleaner sound at higher volumes.

It would have been nice to have some kind of treble/bass controls or an equalizer. Not that I would expect Sirius to do it, but an built in AM/FM radio would be nice; MLB fans would appreciate to listen to AM for their local teams.

The signal pick up, it no worse than using the home docking stations. If you have trouble getting a signal in the house with the home dock or where ever, you'll have the same problem with the box. Unfortunately, no matter what you do, if you don't have a clean site for the antenna, then you'll have signal problems.

Hummm3
Pro:
1. Tiny
2. Tiny
3. Cute
4. Decent radio reception even with very short antenna

Con:
1. Puny sound (but it's a tiny, inexpensive stereo...)
2. IT HUMS. In radio or CD mode, there is a moderate/low pitched hummming sound that comes through the music. Even when you're not playing a CD, there's the hum. I thought it was just me, since I'm very sensitive to hums, but my wife (who doesn't care) noticed it, too, without my pointing it out.

I MAY keep this boombox because it's cheap and cute, but the hum really does irritate me.

Can't beat the price. Bought mine last week and it came with a powercord.4
This is perfect for casual non audio-phile indoor/outdoor use. I bought this to have some tunes outside while myself and a few other workmen are restoring a barn on my property. It is exactly what I needed. I wanted something I didn't mind getting a bit messed up (paint splatters, dings, etc). It's small, lightweight, inexpensive and very functional. The sound quality is decent (especially outdoors with other ambient noise) and though it definitely doesn't have some cooler features (shuffle, etc), it works great for what I wanted it for. I was worried after I read some of the reviews (after I purchased it) that it didn't come with a power cord, but mine did, so I was very happy I didn't have to go out and find one that fit, though I imagine that wouldn't have been that difficult at Radio Shack or some other type of store. All around, I'd say it's a 4 stars for what it is. If you're expecting amazing indoor sound, I'd rate it lower, but it's obviously for pool-side or kids room style use. And if you rate it on what it's meant to be used for, it's decent.

Junk1
I bought this radio as a Christmas gift for my seven year old son. The CD player did not work. It was a bummer. Also, when I bought it I did not know that is was a refurbished unit.

A very simple, modest, and highly upstanding cd player.5
When I purchased my Aiwa Walkman one year ago, I felt like I had made an excellent choice. I had researched all of the different AM/FM radio CD players, and I felt that the Aiwa XPR210 was the best one for me. I use it constantly and now, one year later, I know for a fact that it was an EXCELLENT choice. The radio is great and I find myself using it whenever I am without a CD that I want to listen to. It works very well and I know that if I do ever get a new Walkman, it will have to be one with a digital tuner. The battery life display is excellent because it lets me know whether or not I need to take any extra batteries with me if I'm going on a trip. I have no complaints about the playback that I get with a pair of batteries either. I have tried to make this Walkman skip but I have not been able to do so. It has a great EASS 48 Second Anti-Skip system that definitely gets its job done. I have run, jogged, and hiked with this Walkman and it has never skipped. I would highly suggest this product to anyone who is looking to make a smart purchase on a more than reliable Walkman.

What a lemon!1
I bought this cd player for my son. Within 3 weeks, it was broken. I brought it back to the store and exchanged it for another one. This time the cd player broke in 2 days! He was not rough with it and barely used it. Don't bother with this one. It's a waste of money. I expected more from Memorex.

didn't last2
I bought one of these in June. By October's end it stopped working. It was never dropped and was only used about 10 times. Warranty is only good for 90 days. I expected more from Memorex. Guess I need to buy extended warranties on everything.

Will NOT play MP3s on CD2
It was misrepresented or unclear when I ordered it. I thought it would play MP3s on CD like some of the other CD players. It is solely a CD player with a digital FM/AM tuner. Not a bad product, just not the functionality I expected.

Skip This Product1
I bought this for my walking/jogging class to take my mind off the drudgery of circling the track. It was constantly skipping and shutting off and was totally worthless for my requirements. I was forced to return it and buy a MP3 player.

sucks1
this product is a piece of crap it worked really well for the frist few months and then it just quit it just crapped out the buttons got mashed and would not work then the piece that holds the lid closed broke for no reason!!!!!!! it just really sucks

Surprisingly good for the price4
This is the first thing I've purchased from the Jwin brand. I'm one of those folks who doesn't mind trying an off-brand once in a while. So, I was looking for a simple boom box for my girlfriend to have in the kitchen that did not rely on a remote control and that could play tapes, radio, standard CDs and mp3 CDs since we both collect old-time radio and other stuff in mp3 format. After being disappointed with the Coby unit i mentioned in a previous review, I decided to pick this one up. It's a small unit, so the sound is fine but won't shake the walls with any heavy bass. In fact, the bass boost switch seems to boost the midrange which is all the bottom end the thing has. That's fine because I expected such audio quality from a small and inexpensive unit like this. Tape and radio work fine without any problems. CD player has a transport that moves quickly from track to track. It's a bit noisy, but at least you can hear what the player is doing. It does well with standard CDs and will play most MP3 CDs. It does not play a few of mine for some reason, but it will play most of them. Not sure why it has trouble playing some of them, but I did not expect perfection for the money I paid. Overall, though, we're both happy with this cute little boom box and I'm happy it isn't as picky as the other one I bought recently. I'm not sure how consistent Jwin's quality control is, so hopefully, if you decide to pick up one of these, your unit will work as well as ours does.

Good Value for CD MP3 player!5
I purchased this portable player to play MP3 CDs. It is exactly what I wanted. I do a lot of work re-finishing old houses. While I am doing this work, I like to listen to music, but hauling around 200 CDs to each job is just not practical. This player has allowed me to burn a CD with 15 to 20 albums on it (The most songs I have put on one CD so far is 167), put it in the player on Random, and listen all day.

On the Positive:
1) CD player plays MP3s.
2) FM Radio picks up distant stations very well.
3) The unit is very small, light weight, and easy to move from A to B.
4) The construction seems sound. I don't expect it to brake anytime soon.

On the Negative:
1) Sound is crystal clear, but lacks punch on the lower end. The Base Boost is really a mid range boost.
2) The CD players Random program does not keep tack of which songs it has played, so it is possible to have the same song play two times in a row.

Generic Econo box4
For an econo box, this little thing can blast out the hits with the power of some of the larger units. I got it just for the CD player, I listen to relaxing music when I sleep so this is just perfect for me

Overheats2
When first using it, it is an effective inexpensive CD player. Don't consider it portable, because it is highly vibration sensitive and doesn't have skip protection- even setting a coffee mug on the desk it sits on can make it skip; setting it on a mouse pad helps. I use it on my desk, plugged into an AC adaptor, so that is not usually much of an issue. What IS an issue, is that the area where the AC adaptor plugs in gets very hot after many hours of use, and the CD player malfunctions- it stops spinning fast enough and stops playing with an error code.

Update: It's now died, the malfunction is permanent, not just when it is hot. Unfortunately, I don't know how to remove a star from my review- but it didn't last long enough to be worth two stars imho.

Cost-prohibitive1
No memory, so the slightest movement of the player causes it to skip. Drains batteries at a voracious rate. At least it has provision for an AC adaptor (the Colby does not), but the pin would not remain in contact with the jack unless I squeezed it. Colby, GPX, Jwin--mass-produced lightweight plastic that, if it works, does so erratically and briefly. Even if the players were free, the cost in frustration and disappointment is becoming too high a price to pay. Either the Chinese are getting a chuckle out of shipping these to Americans or are as perplexed as I am why we (I) continue to purchase them.

Good for the price4
The product is good for the price but please beware of the build quality as it not sturdy and may not last long with Kids.

Sony D-FJ041 CD Walkman Portable CD Player with AM/FM Tuner
From Sony

Full Circle Design Compact design mirrors the look of the CD itself.

  • Color: Silver
  • Brand: Sony
  • Model: DFJ041
  • Dimensions: 1.00 pounds

very good--but not quite great4
This Walkman by Sony offers music lovers the opportunity to listen to music files stored on a CD-R, a regular CD (of course), a CD-RW--AND there's even a digital AM and FM radio tuner! While this lacks certain features that a music aficionado might want (like the ATRAC system that some CD players have), this Walkman is really a very good choice for most people including myself. I have more than one Walkman but this is the one I use most often for when I am "on the go;" it's the one I don't mind if it accidentally gets a little bit banged up over time.

You can preset up to twenty FM stations and you can preset up to 10 AM stations--but this won't pick up AM stations very well unless they're located relatively close to where you are. However, that's still good for this price range. This Walkman uses two AA batteries and you get a good amount of play time out of the batteries if you pick good ones. It weighs barely more than seven ounces--great!

At first glance the controls on the Walkman itself appear slightly confusing but after about five minutes tops you learn all the important and most commonly used functions. The controls also make it easy to do basic things such as adjusting the sound, starting a CD and stopping it. The instruction manual is fairly clear as well. The Walkman does have "playback modes" but I rarely use them so I can't comment on that.

Unfortunately, I noticed some disappointments. The controls are rather small so you need to be careful of how you touch them with your fingers. Finally, this type of ear phone set hurts my ears almost from the very start of listening to a CD on this Walkman. I strongly suggest you purchase a better quality headset or earphones that will be more comfortable. (I have to take off one star for that--sorry!)

Overall, music lovers will be very pleased with this affordable Walkman. The features work reliably. The quality of the sound is excellent; and it can handle quite a few presets for different radio stations.

quality for price5
i have had alot of walkmans over the years and i am happy with this one, it does'nt do anything over the top well but mainly i like the sound quality , it sounds alot better than my panasonic and my last sony as well, the fm section on it is really good and that is the main reason i bought it , i wanted a fm and cd walkman for under 50 bucks that had good sound, teh headphones are ok , i actually use earbuds instead so i upgraded that feature , but this walkman is a good choice , good bang for the buck

terrible battery life3
If you're going to use this with an a/c adaptor as a cheap home cd player, go for it. However, battery life I got with new energizer batteries was two hours on FM radio plus 1.5 hours playing CDs. This is not enough for portable use.
